Thinking About Data: Big & Small, Raw & Cooked
Patrick McCray, Professor of History
Miriam Metzger, Professor of Communication
The focus of the Spring 2014 Gateway Seminar is on data and the myriad ways in which researchers from various disciplines both use it as well as understand it. Besides thinking about the changing historical context of data -- what is it? How have people collected, managed, and used it over time? -- we will also address contemporary issues associated with data, especially those related to Big Data. This will include the social implications of data collection, storage, and use in conjunction along with the concomitant changes in information technologies. In addition to considering the possibilities inherent in large data sets as a tool for understanding social phenomena, we will also examine the limitations of this tool.
