Abstract

Managing Concurrent Activities in Collaborative Environments

by: D. Agrawal, J.L. Bruno, A. El Abbadi, and V. Krishnaswamy

Abstract:

An approach to support activities in collaborative databases is proposed. Thisapproach merges flexible transaction models from collaborative environments andsemantics based correctness criteria. A model is first presented whichincorporates the notion of collaboration in the context of transactions. Aprotocol is then developed based on this model for effcient management ofcollaborative activities. This is the first attempt to formally incorporatethe notion of collaboration in the database management system. Most earlierapproaches provide tools and mechanisms to circumvent the isolation requirementof transactions. The protocol is a generalization of strict two-phase lockingsince in the absence of collab oration, it reduces to strict two-phaselocking.
